Q&A - How Do I Decide What Characters/Animals to Draw?

Happy Friday! This is my fifth day of being consistent with writing here on this blog!! I'm going to keep being consistent for the whole month of July and if you have any questions or something you would like me to talk about, let me know.

The last question for this week is; how do I decide what characters/animals to draw? I like to think about things I haven’t seen before and I try to create them. Hipster birds in beanies and swimming trunks? I know I haven’t seen them before, so let’s try it. My favorite subjects are woodland creatures like bears and birds. I love drawing and painting the most magical creatures like unicorns, mermaids and fairies too.

I guess I just go with my gut and I take things I really love and mix them together. Brown girl mermaids with flowing coily curls in vintage clothes are beautiful. Man I miss thrifting btw! If you are trying to create and you are stumped for what to make, find something you love and mix it with something personal about yourself. An example could be that whales are your favorite animal and you wear Warby Parker glasses. Start drawing whales with glasses, could be super cute!

What do you love to draw, paint or doodle? Would love to know!

This watercolor print is of Angelica the Mermaid and she is available in the shop along with other prints, planners, printables, coloring books, art classes and more! :)

Interested in painting too? I have a watercolor guide with videos here! I share tips, tricks I wish I knew when I started painting.
